MARYVILLE, MO (2009-11-30) Northwest Missouri State University is alerting its students to be aware that several federal lawsuits have been filed by the Recording Indrustry Association of America recently against college students.

The lawsuits have been made against individual students in New York, New Jersey, and Michigan for having thousands of songs stored and made available to anyone with access to their University's high-speed networks. The RIAA is seeking maximum damages in the amount of $150,000 per song. It is said that the user is responsible for determinging whether or not various music, movie, or media files are copyrighted, and students are being informed of the importance of adhering to copyright the law.
