MARYVILLE, MO (2010-05-25) It looks like the vote on moving all Maryville businesses to smoke-free may not be happening.
Acitizen's group has been collecting signatures to get the issue on an upcoming ballot after the Maryville City Council voted not to decide the issue but put it to a vote of the people.
But at last night's city council meeting, members entertained the idea of taking that back... opening up the possibility it could be decided by the council rather than spending money for an election.
Terri Harr is chair of the group that's spent 6 months collecting signatures for a ballot vote.
She says she has no problem at all if the issue can be decided with a vote of the city council.
Right now the signature for a ballot initiative does continue. The group has about 12 hundred signatures of the 18-hundred or so needed to put it to a vote of the people.
The Maryville Council could take up the issue again next month to discuss wether to decide on it internally as an ordinance or put it on a future ballot.
