The co-founder of Operation Breakthrough, a social services provider, will be speaking on the Northwest Missouri State campus Thursday evening as part of the University's Ploghoft Diversity Lecture series.
In 1971, Sister Berta Sailer helped start the not-for-profit agency that provides childcare and a broad range of social services for working-poor families. Operation Breakthrough was in response to central city parents in Kansas City who were looking for quality care and education for their children. The agency is now the largest single-site childcare center in Missouri, caring each weekday for more than 500 children, who come to Operation Breakthrough from homeless shelters, foster homes and struggling single-parent families. Sailer will speak on the Northwest campus at seven o'clock Thursday night in the Ron Houston (HOW-ston) Center for the Performing Arts. The lecture is open to the public.
