March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month.
Colorectal Cancer is one of the most easily curable cancers if found early .
39-percent of colorectal cancers are diagnosed at this stage, in part, due to the under use of screening. Chuck Reed with the Iowa chapter of the American Cancer Society says people tend to be apprehensive about the procedure.
Reed says colon cancer is one of only two cancers (the other is cervical cancer) that can actually be prevented through screening.
Reed says there are steps you can take every day to stay well and reduce your risk of colon cancer, such as being physically active and eating a well-balanced diet. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink to no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women, and do not smoke. He says age 50 is when the first screenings are recommended, earlier if you have symptoms or family history of colon cancer.
