ST. JOSEPH, MO (2012-03-08)
Missouri American Water Co. customers in Joplin and St. Joseph will be paying more, starting around April first.
The Missouri Public Service Commission on yesterday agreed to a settlement with the utility, which said it needed to increase rates to pay for improvements to its infrastructure and higher costs of delivering service . The utility had sought an increase of $42.9 million but the commission approved a $23.2 million increase for water and $725,000 for sewer service. The typical Joplin residential customer will pay a 10% increase, or about $3.60 a month. The typical increase for St. Joseph-area customers will be about $4.30 a month, or 15%. Missouri American has about 457,700 water and sewer customers in Missouri.
