ST. JOSEPH (2011-03-15)
More than a million gallons of only partially treated wastewater has been released in St. Joseph.
State environmental officials say late Friday night a pump in a pump station between the city's primary and secondary waste treatment facilities malfunctioned. That sent about 1.2 million gallons of partially treated human waste into the Missouri River. Investigators say increased storm water runoff also contributed to the amount flowing into the Missouri. The state Department of Natural Resources say with the storm water combined with the waste already being partially treated the spill is not expected to effect drinking water systems in communities downstream of St. Joseph that pull raw drinking water from the Missouri River. THe DNR says the city of St. Joseph contacted them early Saturday morning once the failure was discovered.
