ST. JOSEPH (2011-03-04)
After groundbreaking last May, a brand new Islamic mosque opens for public tours in St. Joseph this weekend.
The Islamic Center of St. Joseph has raised about $200,000 for the 3,000 square foot worship and prayer center which will serve about 200 families north of Kansas City to the Iowa border and over to north central Missouri. St. Joseph native and mosque president Ramadhan Washington says they will use the building for prayers 5 times a day, plus as a center to work with other spiritual organizations and community support efforts in St. Joseph. The new mosque is at 2324 Messanie Street in St. Joseph. That's near the YMCA and East of downtown. The open house and guided tours will be tomorrow and Sunday from 11 to 5. Observing afternoon prayers will be at 1:30 each afternoon. An informational session on the mosque will be held at 2 Sunday afternoon.
