ST. JOSEPH, MO. (2010-3-10) An innovative project in St. Joseph is turing that city's landfill into an energy producing machine.
A methane gas gathering system is planned. The project will capture methane gas within the 90 acre landfill and operate a power generating facility. 49 new wells will be created to capture the methane, then blowers will cool the gas and a turbine will convert it to electricity which will flow onto the KCP&L power grid. The amount of electricity produced from the captured gasses are expected to run a thousand homes every year. The city's director of public works says by generating power it will help keep the gate fees of the landfill the lowest in the State, while at the same time providing green energy.
