MARYVILLE, MO (2009-03-03) Smokers in Missouri could see a massive tax increase if a bill going through the house succeeds.
Democratic house member Jamilah Nasheed told the house tax reform committee that raising the state tax on cigarettes from 17 cents to 33 cents a pack could generate up to 90 million dollars in revenue.
But during the back-and forth of debate, GOP house member Ed Emery questioned whether that type of tax would be good for the state.
Nasheed says even with the increase, Missouri would still have one of the lowest cigarette taxes in the country.
The average state sax is about a dollar 10 cents a pack.
