Teen Drivers

Wayman

MO (2012-06-19)

A new study from Missouri suggests strict teen driving laws can help keep young people from driving drunk.

The Washington University report says so-called "graduated driving licensing" laws limit how late at night teens can drive, or how many passengers they can have. "Use and lose" laws impose strict penalties for drinking and driving. Lead author Patrica Cavazos says teens in states with the toughest laws were less likely to drive dunk, or to get in a car with a driver who'd been drinking. She says the next step is to figure out what it is about those laws that's making a difference.

The U-S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a quarter of young drivers who died in a car crash in 2008 were driving under the influence.
