ST. JOSEPH, MO (2012-06-08)
A citizen-airman based in St. Joseph stopped a woman from jumping to her death on the US Route 36 Bridge over the Missouri River last month.
Master Sergeant Heidi Utt, with the Missouri Air National Guard's 139th Airlift Wing, was driving to work at Rosecrans Air Base on May 24th when she noticed a woman standing on the outer side of the bridge's cement barrier. Utt immediately pulled over and began talking with the woman. She was eventually able to talk the woman into coming back over the barrier into safety. The Air Guard holds annual suicide prevention training for their airmen called, "Wingman Project." It provides resources and tools to help prevent suicides, and it trains citizen-airmen and their families to recognize the signs and provide help.
