4 local Missouri National Guardsmen have been awarded for their bravery during an unsuccessful Taliban attack in April.
The Guardsmen were among about 55 soldiers and airmen stationed in Afghanistan since March to help Afghan farmers create a sustainable agriculture program. Senior Airman Ryan Derickson of Chillicothe and Tech Sergeant Troy Green of Cameron were awarded the Combat Action Badge; Specialist Daniel Sadler of St. Joseph was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Badge; and Specialist Matthew Huffman of St. Joseph was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Action Badge, and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor. Public Affairs Representative for the 70th Troop Command for the Missouri National Guard, Bill Phelan said the attack was two-fold.
