ST. JOSEPH, MO (2011-06-08)
St. Joseph voters approve the measure to raise the city's hotel motel tax.
The existing tax visitors pay for staying overnight in St. Joseph is 3%. The city got approval from voters to raise that another 3% making it 6% total. 58% of voters approved the measure. This rate will still be below the hotel tax rates in Kansas City, St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Independence. The 6% tax is expected to bring in about $10 million in the next 20 years, money that will go for riverfront development, the creation of a new family friendly park, and downtown revitalization.
