Northwest Missouri Flood Preps

Wayman

ATCHISON COUNTY, MO (2011-06-02)

Local governments in northwest Missouri are now bringing in sandbags and making preparations for the Missouri River to flood.

They are urging residents to do the same. Levees in Atchison, Holt, and Buchanan counties are anticipated to be overrun by the Missouri River as the army corps of engineers releases water upstream. Buchanan County Emergency Management director Bill Brinton says property owners should prepare for record breaking flooding.

The good news: Brinton anticipates residents have this week and next to prepare for the flooding. The corp's Kansas City District has 2.4 million sandbags on standby as well as 19 pumps and 6 sandbagging machines.
