I-29 Flooding Preps

Wayman

MARYVILLE, MO (2011-06-08)

If the Missouri flood projections hold true, it's a very real possibility Interstate 29 in northwest Missouri could be shut down for miles.

The Missouri Department of Transportation continues to coordinate with the Corps of Engineers, state and federal emergency officials, the National Guard, and bordering states on the I-29 concern. MoDOT's Northwest District Spokeswoman Elaine Justus says if water starts covering I-29 motorists might have to detour to Interstate 35 about 2 and half hours away.

Justus says sandbags are on standby to keep the water away from the interstate as long as possible. She says despite using hydrology studies to prepare, MoDOT planners just have to wait until the water reaches the Missouri border before knowing the impact.
