Hotel Tax

Wayman

ST. JOSEPH, MO (2011-06-06)

St. Joseph voters decide on a tax increase proposal tomorrow.

The election determines if the existing hotel/motel tax of 3% can raise another 3% to 6% total. The tax is for those who stay in hotels and motels in St. Joseph and is projected to generate $10 million in the next 20 years, when it would sunset. St. Joseph Metro Chamber CEO and president Ted Allison says his group is promoting the increase.

Allison says he's read a few letters questioning the hotel tax but seen no organized opposition to the proposal. Polls are open in St. Joseph until 7 tomorrow night.
