Savannah, MO (2010-06-23) A Northwest Missouri farmer who wants to expand his hog operation is meeting opposition from neighbors worried about their quality of life.
Joe Knorr wants to upgrade his 4,000-head operation north of Savannah to 10,000 hogs, taking 9-pound piglets and raising them to 300 pounds.
Knorr told the St. Joseph News-Press his new hog farm will be more than twice as far away from people as state regulations require.
But the founder of an animal rescue facility near Knorr's farm called factory farms inhumane. And a different neighbor thinks the farm will have a negative impact on a nearby golf course.
The Department of Natural Resources is accepting written comments about the proposed farm.
