The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program in Iowa helped over 90-thousand households pay part of their energy bills last winter...but this summer...many of those same families need help with the cost of staying cool.
Director of the Iowa Liheap program...Jerry McKim says the latest figures show Iowa utilities are owed almost 23 million dollars in unpaid power bills.
McKim says there isn't much help available for people having trouble paying power bills during the summer...but for a small number..there is help getting an air conditioner if it's deemed medically necessary.
McKim says many of the community action agencies in Iowa have already spent those funds. He says many struggling Iowa families will end up going into the winter owing even more to the power companies due to high summer cooling costs.
