If state regulators approve it, and rights-of-way can be agreed on, Iowa may see the "Rock Island Clean Line" being built over the next few years.

It's a high-voltage transmission line to transport 3500 megawatts of renewable energy from Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota to Illinois and other states farther east. At the Center for Rural Affairs, energy policy advocate Johnathan Hladik says if the line is built, it will mean thousands of jobs for this part of the country.

The transmission line would carry enough power for more than a million homes in Illinois and Indiana. He says Clean Line Energy Partners, the Houston firm behind the project, is in the process of reaching out to local landowners and communities, asking them to support it.The next step is holding informational meetings to introduce the pros and cons of the proposed project. The Iowa Utilities Board will then decide on its future, perhaps as early as 2013.
