The Secretary fo Agriculture in Missouri designated 97 counties as primary agricultural natural disaster areas.
This allows for certain farmers and other agricultural producers to qualify for low-interest loans from the USDA's Farm Service Agency. Farm Loan Officer for the FSA, Tom Shelton, says an application for the loan must be filled out.
The declaration was made after this summer's severe drought and excessive heat damaged crops and pastures across the state. Loans for physical losses must be used to replace or repair any damage to buildings or fences. Loan money can also be used as compensation for lost livestock and crops. Shelton adds, to qualify for the loan, certain criteria must be met.Even with last week's rain, the drought continues and the effects of this summer's dry weather will be felt far in to the future.© Copyright, KXCV
