ATCHISON COUNTY, MO (2011-07-20)

The Missouri Department of Transportation has scheduled a time to start construction on a new welcome center in Atchison county.

Work on the new center is expected to begin this fall and will be located on Interstate 29 near Rockport. The project is funded by a grant issued by the federal government and is only to be used for beautification or tourist projects such as the welcome center. Spokeswoman for the St. Joseph MoDOT office Elaine Justus says the Department of Transportation has completed many welcome centers along all of our state's border.

Justus adds completion of the building is expected in December of 2012.
