Summer Meningitis

Wayman

MARYVILLE, MO (2010-07-21) School nurses throughout Missouri are pushing for teens and pre-teens to get vaccinated this summer for meningitis.

The bacterial or viral disease that inflames the membranes around the brain and spinal chord is fatal about 10 percent of the time.

Only about a third of Missouri kids have been vaccinated for the preventable kind- bacterial meningitis.

Kathy Pickering with the Missouri School Nurses Association and says kids 11 to 18 and those getting ready to live in college dorms need the shots- and she's trying to spread the word.

In a typical year more than 20 Missourians get the potentially fatal disease.

In the past 5 years, it's killed 18 Missourians.
