St. Joseph, MO (2010-07-20) Downtown St. Joseph is losing a feature it's had for years- the sound of blaring train horns.
Mo-Dot says safety measures are now in place to designate the City a Federal Quiet Zone.
That's an area named by the Federal Railroad Administration that bans the routine requirement of trains sounding their horns while going through.
Officials say the new safety measures mean trains no longer have to blow their horns at the crossings, unless of emergencies.
About half a million dollars went into the rail safety improvements.... which include warning devices with Gates at Fourth Street and Francis Street in St. Joseph.
The highway-rail crossings at Monterey Street, Mitchell Avenue , and Seneca Alley have been closed.
