MARYVILLE, MO (2010-7-27) Kidney disease research will be conducted in Maryville thanks to grant worth more than $200,000.
Dr. Rafiq Islam is a chemistry and physics professor at Northwest Missouri State University. The National Institutes of Health has awarded Northwest the research grant. Dr. Islam will be studying a specific gene that in its absence or defect often creates tumors in kidneys. He says the exact function of the gene still is unknown, and hopes to shed light on it and hopefully regulate its cyst-causing behavior. Islam's grant from the National Institutes of Health is the second the NIH has given to Northwest Missouri State the school's first went to him as well back in 2005. His current research is expected to continue through the summer of 2013.
