MARYVILLE, MO (2009-07-20) Ticks remain a danger during the summer months…but Doctors say the risk of disease doesn't mean you should spend summer inside.
If someone, even a child, is bit by a tick, the risk of disease still remains small.
Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Dennis O'connor says fewer than 3 percent of ticks carry bacteria that can cause disease in humans.
but O'connor also says any tick should be carefully removed and parents need to stay alert for symptoms.
O'connor also recommends if you are going to an area with a large population of ticks to wear proper clothing that covers your skin and legs.
He also says to use bug spray containing deet to try preventing tick bites.
