Soybean Pest Discovered

Wayman

Holt County, MO (2010-1-4) The extension agent out of Holt County is warning a new soybean pest has been confirmed in Missouri.

The red banded stink bug was found in 3 field samples out of 14 in the Missouri Bootheel.

The insect has the ability to quickly reproduce and become a major pest of soybeans.

It's already damaging crops in most southern states and in South and Central America.

Agriculture officials say it's more resistant to insecticides than other stink bugs.

They say soybean yields have been reduced by an average of 43 percent in the southern states that have the red banded stink bug.
