MISSOURI (2010-1-26) A new audit finds that the Missouri Department of Transportation underestimated how much it will cost for road and bridge repairs in Missouri in the next 20 years.
In a report issued in 2008, Mo-Dot estimated the difference between money available and the actual cost to build and repair roads and bridges to be nearly 19 billion dollars. But State auditor Susan Montee says the gap has likely been much higher, because it was estimated without allowing for inflation. Mo-Dot responds by saying the report was written for the general public as a glimpse of Missouri's transportation needs. They also say the State auditor should have focused on a prior long-range transportation plan, which contains more reliable estimates.
