Deer Found with CWD

Coffey

MO (2013-01-24)

A deer recently harvested in north-central Missouri has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease, which is fatal to deer.

The deer was taken in northwest Macon County, where five previous cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have been found since early last year. Protection District Supervisor with the Missouri Department of Conservation...Ken Polley...says the deer was identified from approximately 17 Hundred tissue samples collected for C-W-D testing from hunter-harvested deer in the six-county "C-W-D Containment Zone". Polley says Missouri Conservation officials are contacting landowners in the area where the deer was found in an effort to control the deer population.

The latest sampling effort took place in Adair, Chariton, Linn, Macon, Randolph and Sullivan Counties during the past fall archery and firearms deer seasons.
