Colleges and universities in Maryville, St. Joseph, and Trenton are going to have a hard time breaking through the requests for state funding this year.

That's according to Paul Wagner, he's the deputy commissioner of Missouri's Department of Higher Education. An earlier 12 and a half percent funding cut proposed by governor Nixon is prompting colleges to explain funding to state lawmakers. Wagner says the strongest argument might be higher education's impact on training and job creation. He adds that's also the weakest argument.

Missouri's schools have already cut low-enrollment academic programs and are trying to work together to avoid excess duplication in the state.
