MARYVILLE, MO (2012-02-08)
Good news for colleges in Maryville, St. Joseph, and Trenton.
The governor's office says the state is getting a multi-million dollar legal settlement, and 40 million of that money will be restored to public colleges and universities. Governor Nixon has asked school presidents from across the state to meet him in Jefferson City tomorrow to explain the arrangement. The 40 million comes from a multi-state lawsuit settled with the nation's 5 largest mortage banks. The total settlement is 140 million dollars, and of that the governor is planning on restoring 40 million to the colleges. Earlier Nixon had proposed withholding 12.5% of the state's higher education funds, prompting Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri Western in St. Joseph, and North Central in Trenton to begin exploring possible cuts in majors and employees, as well as possible tuition increases.
