ANDREW COUNTY, MO. (2010-2-1) The brand new Andrew County jail could mean opportunities for the surrounding region and an income stream for the County.
Andrew commissioners last week signed contracts to replace the current 105 year-old jail with a new 63-bed jail. Andrew County sheriff Bryan Atkins says he spent $111,000 last year sending his overflow prisoners to other facilities. Now, he says, that trend can reverse. The nearly $5 million project is set to break ground in May, with the new Andrew County jail open for business next May. It will also include video arraignment technology so high-risk prisoners won't have to leave jail for their court appearances.
