MARYVILLE, MO (2009-12-23) Those real Christmas trees may already be dropping needles into your carpet, but one forestry expert says there are steps to take to keep it fresher longer.

Hank Stelzer warns you should avoid water additives like aspirin, soft drinks, or commercial tree preservatives- a lot of the time they just gum up the tree from taking in water.

He says besides watering, one of the most important things you can do is simply keep your Christmas tree away from heat sources.

The rule of thumb for watering your tree is a quart of water for each inch in diameter.
