Des Moines, Ia. (2009-12-30) The giving spirit abounds this time of year, and no one knows that better than scammers.

Chris Coleman heads the Better Business Bureau in Iowa and says before opening your checkbook, realize there are grinches out there that have a lot of tricks- even falsifying well-known charities to take advantage.

Coleman suggests you investigate to find out if a charity is legitimate and be especially cautious of pitches made by e-mail, over the phone, or door-to-door.
