Lager On Wages

Wayman

MARYVILLE, MO (2008-12-02) Northwest Missouri's Senator is speaking out against a plan to raise his salary.

Brad Lager of Savannah has long run on a platform of saving money in state government.

Now, he tells KXCV news he's very disappointed in a citizen's group that is recommending a pay increase for lawmakers, judges, and statewide elected officials.

The statehouse is expected to take up the recommendation when it re-convenes in January.

But Lager says a change in the law two years ago could make it into a constitutional mandate where the general assembly will have no power to stop the process.

Lager says while families in Missouri are re-evaluating their spending and the state is preparing for a budget shortfall, now is not the time to pay elected officials more.

Lager says he'll be introducing a bill next session that could stop the salary increases.
