MARYVILLE, MO (2012-12-06)

A December Northwest Missouri State graduate who is being deployed today by the U-S Navy for service in Afghanistan was surprised with a special graduation ceremony yesterday afternoon.

Bryce Webb of Winterset, Iowa was set to graduate on December 14th with a bachelor of science degree in horticulture with a minor in biology but learned he was being called to duty before being able to take part in next week's graduation ceremony. Northwest commencement coordinator Gina Bradley and University administrators organized the ceremony after learning this week of Webb's change of plans. Webb says yesterday's event came as a total surprise to him.

Northwest Provost Dr. Doug Dunham says he was glad to take part in yesterday's ceremony.Webb embarks on a one-year deployment today and says he hopes to one day open his own landscaping business.
