MARYVILLE, MO (2011-12-05)
The numbers are in and this year's turkey harvest beat last year's numbers.
That's according to the Missouri Department of Conservation, which says more than 700 turkeys were checked, that's more than 7,000 turkeys were checked, that's more than 1,100 from last year. Juvenile turkeys make up 59% of this fall's total. Conservation officials say flooding on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers made for a rough year for the birds, but this fall was the first dry one in nearly 5 years, bringing numbers well above the trend. Nearly 1,500 turkey hunting permits were sold this year in the Show-Me-State.
