North Missouri will have to get snow, and a lot of it, to make up for this year's drought conditions.

Moisture levels this year are being blamed partially for the state's low crop yields, soybeans averaged 4 bushels an acre less this year than last, and with corn yields also down AG officials estimate 500 million dollars in lost profits. Randy miles is a soil scientist for the University of Missouri's college of agriculture, food and natural resources. He says it will be nearly impossible for snows this winter to make up for the lack of soil moisture.

He says even if the topsoil looks soaked, it's the subsoil a few feet down that determines root growth for the crops.
