Children's experts say in today's pop culture, it can be hard to teach kids the "Giving" part over the "Getting" part during Christmas.

Dr. Heidi Sallee is a Missouri pediatrician and says resisting commercial suggestions could turn the focus away from the most expensive or extravagant gifts.

Sallee suggests explaining charitable donations can create a giving gift. And she says giving books to a young leaner can often translate into getting adult help to read, promoting time with family.
