IOWA (2010-12-20) A new national report says Iowa lawmakers are ahead of most other states when it comes to funding pre-kindergarten programs.

Even with budget shortfalls, the pew center analysis shows Iowa has set aside 16 million in start-up funds for pre-kindergarten programs in the next fiscal year. Marci Young is the study's director and says that effort will narrow the achievement gap in later grades. Young adds research is showing strong pre-kindergarten programs reduces grade repeating and special education placement and can even lead to greater employment and earning potential in adulthood.
