MARYVILLE, MO (2009-12-07) Jack Frost isn't just nipping at your nose, he's going for your water pipes also.
As cold winter weather settles in, precautions need to be taken to avoid water pipes from freezing. As water freezes it expands and the resulting ice that forms in the pipes can cause pressure to build up and shatter pipe seals or the pipe itself sending water pouring through your house. Brent Butler who is the government affairs director from the Missouri insurance information service says that prevention is they way to avoid heavy repair costs. A few of the steps that can be taken to minimize the chance of frozen water pipes include, opening kitchen cabinets that boarder outside walls to expose water pipes to warmer indoor air, using faucet covers or wrap rags, paper, trash bags or plastic foam around outdoor faucets and pipes.
