Chronic Wasting Disease or CWD could hurt Missouri's deer population.
CWD is a neurological disease that affects deer. It has no cure, and is fatal. The infectious disease was detected for the first time in North Central Missouri in 2010, specifically Macon County. When identified, it was only in captive deer. District Supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation from Mound City, Russ Shifflet, says it is the goal of the MDC to keep the disease contained, but that has proven difficult.
