Farmers and Drought

Nuelle

TAYLOR COUNTY, IA (2012-08-29)

Many farmers across the region will suffer huge losses with the extreme weather conditions the area is having, but planting a cover crop may be the solution in these times of trouble.

Taylor County, Iowa farmer Kelly Tobin has been planting cover crops for the last 3 years. He found out that planting Rye allows for absorption of water in wet years and is able to hold water in dry years.

Tobin says the difference on fields where he planted cover crops can not only be seen in how the crop looks, but in the yield after harvest.Tobin says farmers need to get a cover crop in just as soon as the crops are harvested, so that it can reach its peak by the time the ground freezes.
