The US Department of Agriculture is seeking public comment on a proposed rule that could have major implications for our Midwest corners livestock producers.

The USDA wants to implement animal traceability of livestock moved between states. The plan comes after 2 years of USDA officials working on a plan to trace animals in the event of a health concern. Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack says the state's will have to pay for the technology involved in the program, which is expected to cost around 14 million dollars a year.

Vilsack concedes congress still needs to release the funds to help states pay for the proposal. Public comment to the USDA on the plan is being accepted through November 9th.
