Nixon on Withholdings

Wayman

MARYVILLE, MO (2011-08-30)

Missouri governor Jay Nixon is defending his decision to withhold more than 170 million dollars from the state budget, despite a state lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.

Before the start of the current budget year Nixon announced he would withhold the funds from schools and other agencies. State auditor Tom Schweich has filed suit saying the governor can only do so if revenue is coming in below projections. Nixon calls such withholdings a common practice.

Nixon says he reached the 170 million dollar figure by cutting out revenue lawmakers included but never passed legislation to collect.
