Missouri governor Jay Nixon returned to St. Joseph yesterday to announce funding for repairing flood-damaged levees along the Missouri River will be a topic during next month's special legislative session.

The governor says he wants lawmakers to help develop a plan to pay for hundreds of miles of damaged levees starting in northwest Missouri and working downstream across the state. Nixon says it's critical for the levee protection system and to help reclaim flooded farmland.

Nixon also says he will be in Omaha Friday at a gathering of governors from Missouri River upstream states. They will be questioning the brigadier general of the US Army Corps of Engineers northwest district about decisions that led to the historic flood. Today the corp begins decreasing the flood water flow on the Missouri by 5,000 cubic feet per second every day until it drops to 90,000 cubic feet per second. Right now it's at 145,000.
