MARYVILLE, MO (2010-08-05) Maryville businesses and residents could be on the receiving end of a possible phone scam that could charge you.
The chamber says a Maryville business received a phone call from someone saying they were from the phone company and started asking questions about the phone account. The caller gave the excuse of needing to update the system, but refused to give a call-back number. The legitimate phone company, Century Link says this is probably a scam involving a practice called "Slamming" which sticks a 3rd party with billing charges. Slam scammers often get you to say "YES" to a question, then use that as an agreement to a charge. Authorities say you should be suspicious about such calls.
