MARYVILLE, MO (2009-08-28) St. Francis Hospital and Health Services is increasing awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding to celebrate The World Breastfeeding Month.
August is World Breastfeeding Month and the theme this year is "Every Ounce Counts". The theme emphasizes the importance of initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of life to save children's lives. Human milk is the best possible food for any infant. The milk can protect babies against illnesses such as ear infections, allergies, wheezing, pneumonia, vomiting and diarrhea. Nurse Manager of the Obstetrics Unit at St. Francis Hospital, Kathy Brand, says breastfeeding is essential to all infants. Brand also says breastfeeding takes practice to make the process easier and more comfortable for both mother and baby. St. Francis will give away an automatic breast pump early September to commemorate World Breastfeeding Month and continue to support breastfeeding and help mothers with the process all year round.
