New Storm Warning

Totusek

PLEASANT HILL, MO (2012-04-03)

The National Weather Service is introducing a new kind of severe weather warning system based upon the damage the storm is predicted to cause.

The system created has 5 tiers, 2 for thunderstorms and 3 for tornados and will use words like "Mass Devastation", "unsurvivable", and "Catastrophic" to get the attention of listeners. Andy Bailey, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill says the idea is to encourage people to take action.

The tests started yesterday for our listening area and will be operational throughout Kansas and Missouri. The new wording will be in all National Weather Service bulletins and over weather radios from now through early November.
