Missouri Education Overhaul

Wayman

ST. JOSEPH, MO. (2010-4-23) The Missouri senate passes a proposed constitutional amendment by the St. Joseph senator that would combine the two departments that oversee all schools in the State into one agency.

It would merge the department of elementary and secondary education which oversees K-12 schools, and higher education, which oversees university and community colleges. The new agency would simply be called the "Department of Education". Sponsor and senate president pro-tem Charlie Shields of St. Joseph says the move would not just save money, but create a better educational system for Missouri students. The resolution now goes to the Missouri House, which has not been enthusiastic about senate proposals to merge State agencies. If it would pass there, it would go to Missouri voters in November.
