MARYVILLE, MO (2010-4-22) Operating in the financial recession, the Marceline R-5 school board cuts nearly $400,000 from its budget.
Board members acknowledge declining enrollment and the state money tied to number of students as another reason for the $380,000 cut. $49,000 was cut from the music and band budget, even though the music and band will still be offered at Marceline. $22,000 was cut from social studies, and $23,000 from the Chillicothe bus routes. Several positions like paraprofessional, secretary, and clerical will also be eliminated, although R-5 superintendant Gabe Edgar says many cuts will come from attrition.
